Round 6 – June 11th – VS Eagles at Langley
Pre Pre Pre Game (Kelowna)
The boys headed on the annual trip to Kelowna last weekend. The trip had been marred in previous years by drunken hooligans. Friday night was a quiet one at Rosie’s. It was great to see the whole of BC footy mingling with Bikers and WWFB (women with fake boobies – which by the way, there was a far higher percentage of than usual….a crazy statistical anomaly no one was complaining too much about!).
The tournament started with a few sore heads. The pre match speech was a window into a disturbed mind! The coach (mm let me see if I can remember who it was…yep it was Joycee) rocked up 5 minutes before the game. He then proceeded to do nothing, and told the boys to arrange themselves. It was no surprise that BC footy lost the first match after such an appalling coach’s speech. Edmonton did well to win, with lots of heart. Mind you their best players were Regan, Lulu, Mick and Vards, who were all filling in. Once again the coach made a speech that resembled something from ‘The Shining’, with very vague references to A.F.L., but focusing on Strippers and Yagerbombs. (Please note Joycee…I just asked Priya if I was being too mean…she stated “he deserves it”…yes she is a hard woman.) The boys had a very hard task with a fit and strong Calgary in the second game in a row. The boys rallied after all developing amnesia and forgetting the coach’s speech. It was a hard fought match, with Mick stating “I don’t want to lose to these dirty b*&terds” and Boz giving some timely advice, which prompted the guys to jump over the line (against arguable the top side).
Saturday night began at the pub watching the Canucks. To everyone surprise Colgate dropped in from Vancouver, and was welcomed by all (including some very questionable women..an Boz’s ass.) He is a very social animal, and was tagged in many photos. Please check them all out. BC footys best and brightest ended up at Flashbacks, with every dancing a storm. The Irish were in particularly good form with NO ONE able to understand Rory or Declan (to be honest though, no one can understand them). The ride home was fairly subdued with many nursing some fine hangovers.
Game Report Round 6
The cougars played the early game. Everyone was again nursing a bit of a hangover (we seem to do this a bit) with our boys the CANUCKS taking a one game lead in the cup final!! (now it’s even…..DAMM IT). As I was writing 2 days ago, they boy were a little under the weather against the top side. BUT the Cougars had their secret weapon….one that was initially restricted (probably by the CIA) from entering North America. But by masquerading as an international business man (by booking a trip to London) he was back.
Pre Game
Coach Boz had arrived! No one was happier than Mr Krazy, who had been doing a great job as President, Captain, Coach, Player, and most likely every other thing at the club. Boz’s pre game focused on running the balls (wops I meant ball – bit weird), contesting all Arial contests, and using our speed to our advantage. They guys were tired, but motivated. The cougars were very lucky to have Baz, 2 time B&F winner, back from London (to see the end of the Cup series- which F-ing didn’t happen, dam it!)
1st Quarter
The first quarter was a hard fought affair. The Eagles were soaring (no he didn’t…yes I did just make that reference), and controlling most of the play. The back line was fighting hard led by Macca, Coops, Teddy and the on ball division was led by a crazy Krazy, and a fit Hop. Krazy was tackling everyone, and leading the boys with hardball gets, and placing his body on the line. The Eagles were controlling the play, slipping tackles, and winning most of the contested positions. They managed to utilize the ball well and kick 4 goals 3 points. The ball only entered the Cougars forward 50 4-5 times, but Gav took every chance and kicked 2, with Krazy chipping in with one. The boys entered quarter time behind 19 to 27. Boz immediately focused on tackling and running the ball. There seemed to be some kind of hairy hobo yelling at the guys too, which was quite disturbing to all watching, I believe some of the girls even began to cry at how hideous he was.
2nd Quarter
The Cougars came out a lot stronger after the rest. Maybe they were channelling the happy dance La Pierre showed us, or maybe they were sobering up. Once again Gav (who must have kicked 100 by now) kicked 2 more for the quarter. Simon actually tried to lay a tackle, but was hip checked (this isn’t an ice hockey reference, that’s what actually happened) like an 8 year old child against Ballard. However the rest of the boys picked up their physical play. The cougars were actually winning a lot of the play around the ground, but couldn’t seem to get out of their backline without kicking to Andre the Giant’s (all of the eagles, tall bast&*ds). It was as frustrating as god damm game 6, we were playing well, but they were kicking goals. The eagles ended up with 3 for the quarter and the cougars 2. The boys went in down 32 to 60.
3rd Quarter
Boz instructed the boys to use better options to get the ball out of the back line, Coops even discussed a switch, and the boys listened to Grey Beard, he is one who is very wise! (sorry coops). Finally it looked like Colgate (who kicked about 6 goals in the next game, but couldn’t get his shit together for ours) had sobered up, and started taking some great marks, while also discussing the promising effect of Colgate Total, 24 hour protection. Nice cross promotion Ian. Again Gav stood up and kicked the only goal for the quarter. Ash was leading like a man possessed, creating lots of space and pulling down some great pack marks. Unfortunately for him the forward line was a busy as the streets of Vancouver on Friday. But again the cougars wasted the ball (much like Hank missing a bouncing puck in front of an open net…god dam it!), controlling for long periods, but turning the ball over. There was some great in an under play for 1st gamer Kewi. Ben as well used his speed and kick to the cougars advantage on the wing. Neu was put onto an always chippy Adam, and preformed well. Macca was holding down arguably the strongest Full Forward in the league (not literally, as that one could bench press a car) Once again though, the Eagles outscored the Cougs 2 to 1 goal, and the boys went in down by 19 points.
4th Quarter
The boys came out of the block in the last quarter. Tackling well, winning the ball, and pushing forward. Kewi sprinted about 70 meters to lay one of the best tackles ever seen in BCAFL! Macca laid a sheppard, that was as good as one the greatest Sheppardist of all time, the one and only Jebus! John popped up in the forward line to Kick one. Hamish was doing well to hold down one of the Eagles best, Lulu, but had to sacrifice his own game. Then hop (who for some reason never seems hungover, or sick, only fit) busted through a pack to kick a great running goal. The boys were within 3 straight kicks. However, just like the bruins (who can go and eat a pile of poo) the Eagles responded well and kicked the next two to seal game. The boys went down 18 (sorry text sad face have no place in a footy writeup)
Goal Scores: 5 Gav, 1 Krazy, 1 John
Best: Krazy, Macca, Kewi, Ted, Neu, Hop
Thanks to the umpires and the girls who helped out. No thanks to Joyce who claimed they were there ½ hour early to set up. Yet it took Lex and the Eagle boys to set up one end (took about 2 mins), and the best minds of the Cougars (25 minutes later Boz, Simon and Neu were still not done, eye and string lines were mentioned) to get the ground set up.
