Round 1 Match Report

Last weekend welcomed the start of the 2012 BC Footy season with the Cougars taking on the reigning premiers, the Burnaby Eagles.

Numbers had been good at training with a number of new as well as returning faces and we were hopeful that that would translate to a great year on the field.

The first quarter was tightly contested with the Cougars taking an early two goal lead. Ash was doing a great job taking the taps and we were getting some great run and drive from half back and across the midfield. The tackling was ferocious and new Cougar Brent took some tough contested marks early on. Danny Cravino hadn’t missed a beat and was providing a great target up front. The good start was marred when new recruit Aaron Roche went down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

In the second quarter the Cougars had a lot of wasted opportunities with poor delivery into the forward line. The Cougars were clearly the better side but that was not being reflected on the score board. Boz was trying hard but was clearly out-sized by the 7ft giant that was playing on him. The Eagles got two goals back on us and there was nothing in it at half time.

I’m not sure if it was Boz’s inspirational half time speech or the sugar from Ted’s candy but the Cougars raced out of the blocks in the third quarter. We witnessed some champagne football and a goal fest with Danny and Boz getting on the scoreboard. Jords and Cam were in amongst it and Ash and the midfield were dominating again with great run from Crazy and Turvs we even saw a cameo appearance by Ryan “Number 1” Druwitt. The new Irish lads were also gaining confidence and started to take on their men and put their superior leg speed to good use. The backline was also standing tall with first gamers Adam, Pat and Rory combining well.

By the end of the third quarter the game was won and much of the early heat had gone out of the contest. The Cougars piled on a few more goals in the forth and ran out the game well.

All in all it was a great start to the season and even better to get a win against an opponent that the Cougars had failed to beat last year. This week the Cougars will be taking on the Bayhawks where we can hopefully make it 2 from 2.

Final score: Cougars 12.7.79 def. Eagles 4.5.29

Senior Coach Position Available for Australian Rules football club in Vancouver

Senior Coach Position Available for Australian Rules football club in Vancouver

Vancouver Cougars require a Coach for season 2012. Preseason training begins February and the season goes until August/September. It is a non paid role as the club is a non for profit organisation. The social aspect is a large focus of the club, with 3 road-trips for “cup” tournaments every season, and many social function. However, on the field we are a professional outfit, which thrives on success.

Vancouver Australian Football Club (VAFC) was created on January 15, 2001. The cougars play in the BCAFL (British Columbia Australian Football League), and were a founding team. The cougars were North West Division champions 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and USAFL champions in 2008. The BCAFL is a social competition with both Ex-pats and Internationals. It is a fantastic way to meet and network with fellow Australians who reside in Vancouver.

Training is usually held once a week, with a game around every second week in summer. There is a 50/50 split on the field of Australians and Internationals. Players consist of mixed ability levels, which can provide a challenge to the right candidate. We currently have skilled and experienced footballers, and internationals that are learning the game for the first time. You will be supported by a core group of senior players as well as the Board.

Skills and Experience Required:
• A history of leadership in Australian Rules in Australia
• In-depth knowledge of Australian Rules
• Previous coaching experience is an asset, but not a must
• Ability to coach to different skill levels
• A interest in developing football internationally
• Capacity to work with others to ensure a successful season
• Friendly and outgoing.

This position is ideal for experienced footballers moving to Vancouver who are looking to stay involved in Australian Rules, but might not necessarily want to play. We will be accepting sideline coaches and player/coaches.

Kelowna Cup – June 4th

it is that time of year again, the weather is warming up in the interior and so is lake okanagan. the kelowna cup is upon us again. For those that are new to the team, the kelowna cup is a once a year tournament involving the 2 calgary teams and 1 edmonton team. We usually make our way up on the friday evening or saturday morning for the saturday tournament. each team gets in about 3 half length games. BC Footy is most likely going to have 2 teams represented (depending on amount who turn up).

BC is going to book the hostel for a certain amount of people so let me know ASAP if you are keen to come and if you would like one of the hostel rooms. of course you can organise your own accommodation if you want to stay with your other half but still let me know if you are keen to play. the tournament is on the saturday 4th June.

it is always a great trip!
