Senior Coach Position Available for Australian Rules football club in Vancouver

Senior Coach Position Available for Australian Rules football club in Vancouver

Vancouver Cougars require a Coach for season 2012. Preseason training begins February and the season goes until August/September. It is a non paid role as the club is a non for profit organisation. The social aspect is a large focus of the club, with 3 road-trips for “cup” tournaments every season, and many social function. However, on the field we are a professional outfit, which thrives on success.

Vancouver Australian Football Club (VAFC) was created on January 15, 2001. The cougars play in the BCAFL (British Columbia Australian Football League), and were a founding team. The cougars were North West Division champions 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and USAFL champions in 2008. The BCAFL is a social competition with both Ex-pats and Internationals. It is a fantastic way to meet and network with fellow Australians who reside in Vancouver.

Training is usually held once a week, with a game around every second week in summer. There is a 50/50 split on the field of Australians and Internationals. Players consist of mixed ability levels, which can provide a challenge to the right candidate. We currently have skilled and experienced footballers, and internationals that are learning the game for the first time. You will be supported by a core group of senior players as well as the Board.

Skills and Experience Required:
• A history of leadership in Australian Rules in Australia
• In-depth knowledge of Australian Rules
• Previous coaching experience is an asset, but not a must
• Ability to coach to different skill levels
• A interest in developing football internationally
• Capacity to work with others to ensure a successful season
• Friendly and outgoing.

This position is ideal for experienced footballers moving to Vancouver who are looking to stay involved in Australian Rules, but might not necessarily want to play. We will be accepting sideline coaches and player/coaches.

Kelowna Cup – June 4th

it is that time of year again, the weather is warming up in the interior and so is lake okanagan. the kelowna cup is upon us again. For those that are new to the team, the kelowna cup is a once a year tournament involving the 2 calgary teams and 1 edmonton team. We usually make our way up on the friday evening or saturday morning for the saturday tournament. each team gets in about 3 half length games. BC Footy is most likely going to have 2 teams represented (depending on amount who turn up).

BC is going to book the hostel for a certain amount of people so let me know ASAP if you are keen to come and if you would like one of the hostel rooms. of course you can organise your own accommodation if you want to stay with your other half but still let me know if you are keen to play. the tournament is on the saturday 4th June.

it is always a great trip!

Cougars down Hawks for Round 1 win

In their opening round match the Cougars got up on the Bayhawks early and never looked back.

Both teams were playing with a collection of new and old faces but it was the Cougars who gelled quicker and fell into a groove early on.  Cougars veterans M. Harrison and Steier kicked early goals along with newcomers Gavin and Rocket before the Bayhawks could get on the board.

When the Hawks worked the ball inside 50, the relentless pressure from the Cougars back-line, led by Coops and BC, ensured there wasn’t any time or space to have their efforts reflected on the scoreboard.  The pressure from the back-line was contagious and the entire Cougars line-up showed great fitness chasing down every Hawk in sight.  New comers Turvs, Brod and Rory dominated the middle and created numerous turnovers that led to Cougars scores.

Canadian National team members Clayton Lund and Matt Payne were bright spots for the Hawks; Lund snagging at least 2 majors in close and Payne playing strong in the backline all day.  Regan led his young squad from the back pocket and gobbled up any and all wayward Cougars kicks.

A full match report, scores and goal kickers will be posted shortly.

Thanks to everyone that braved to cold weather to come out and support.
